My working career began with the design, and later the construction, of architectural structures. This love for form in buildings has evolved into a respect for structure and form in all materials, and today is the basis for my relationship with clay.
In building my pieces, I use a combination of slab and coil methods. My finishes are glazeless – the product of fire, smoke and, with my pit-fired work, the fumes from organic materials, salts and copper oxides. The ritual of the smoke or pit firing reconnects the work to its earthly origins.
My work explores the relationships we have with the natural world around us. My desire is not to imitate nature, but to express the beauty that can be found by capturing the essence of the natural world. Clay talks to me and tells me what it wants to be… I strive to be worthy of its trust.
